Common Reasons Your Cadillac AC Isn’t Cooling Properly
Refrigerant Leak
Refrigerant is a colorless, odorless gas that removes moisture from the air and chill it to produce the cold air that blows into your cabin. It operates in a closed loop, being continually pumped through the system and changing from gas to liquid to gas again as it cools the air. Worn seals or damage to the system can cause a leak, and the pressurized refrigerant will quickly escape.
A leak is impossible to spot with the naked eye, as refrigerant disperses instantly on contact with the outside air. You’ll notice its effect, however, as the air in the cabin will become steadily warmer. We trace the leak by adding a UV dye to the refrigerant, then following its progress through the system using a UV viewer. Once we locate the leak site, we’ll repair it and then refill the refrigerant.
Broken Compressor Clutch
The compressor clutch controls the compressor, which pumps refrigerant and air through the system. The clutch switches the compressor on and off at set intervals to move them through each stage of the cooling process. Natural wear and tear can cause the clutch to fail, leaving the compressor stuck on or off.
If the compressor is jammed in the on position, it continues to run and will become noisy as it wears out. On the other hand, if the compressor is stuck in the off position, it can’t operate at all, and only warm air will blow into your cabin. We’ll examine the clutch and replace it if it’s failed to fix this problem.
Damp Passenger Carpet
A wet front passenger carpet when it hasn’t been raining is usually a sign of a blocked drain line. Air contains moisture, which must be removed, so the now-dry air can be cooled. This water collects in the evaporator heater box and drains out of your Cadillac through a rubber hose. Bacteria in the air can mix with this water to form a slimy substance that blocks the hose.
Water will accumulate in the heater box and gradually overflow. Since the heater box is positioned behind the fireboard on the front passenger side, the water will soak into the carpet. We’ll sterilize the heater box and replace the hose to fix this issue.
